This is a long distance call which crosses LATA boundaries and is usually handled by ATT, MCI, Sprint, et al. Many states have several LATAs, so you could call your friend upstate, and it could be either IntraLATA or InterLATA. If it's InterLATA it will probably be handled by one of the aforementioned long distance companies. For example, Indianapolis to Fort Wayne is InterLATA. But Indianapolis to Lafayette is IntraLATA, although all these places are L/D to each other. This would be a good example of a local toll call, where as Indianapolis to Fort Wayne would be a long distance call. Get the drift yet?
