It Can't Happen Here is a novel about a
fascist takeover of
the United States of America. It was written in
1935 by
Sinclair Lewis and was inspired by events in
Italy and especially in
Germany.
Its protagonist is Doremus Jessup, a middle-aged moderate.
Its antagonists include the dictator himself, Buzz Windrip (who was based on Louisiana's Huey Long); Windrip's right-hand man, Lee Sarason, who actually held most of the power; Bishop Prang, a religious radio personality (who was based on Father Coughlin) with immense influence.
