Jam Echelon Day was started on the 21st of October of 1999 to raise public awareness of the government’s spying program, Echelon. Echelon uses filters to narrow down the enormous amount of data (about 90% of the internet, along with phone and satellite communications) it intercepts. The primary filters rank emails and conversations by order of importance by noting the number of certain keywords in the text. Anything that goes through the initial filter (and has keywords such as “terrorist” or “bombing”) is then sorted using more advanced filters and AI routines before it is read by an operator. The purpose of Jam Echelon day, as its title implies, is to jam the echelon system by having a huge number of emails containing the keywords be sent around the internet. While it probably won’t jam the system entirely, it will force operators to create new filters to weed out the fake emails (sent by people participating in JED) from whatever they are really looking for.
