The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry crosses the James River between Jamestown and Surry, Virginia at Virginia Route 31. The ferry operates four boats: the "Pocahontas,"the "Williamsburg,"the "Surry," and the "Virginia,". The "Captain John Smith" made the first trip carrying passengers and vehicles across the James River on February 26, 1925. Twenty years later the Virginia Department of Transportation took over the operation of the ferry.
