A beautiful garden and rather chaotic tea house in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, near the Asian Art Museum. The grounds are marvelous, I felt like I was back in some of my favorite gardens in China, occasionally. It is free everyday from 5 to 6 pm, and half-price on Wednesdays (I think). The usual admission is $3.50 as of July 27, 2000; I must admit I think this is excessive, especially since it's about $3 for tea and Japanese snacks in the tea house. Go when it's free. And don't buy the bags of snacks; any Bay Area grocery store will have an equal selection cheaper, and an Asian store will have a much larger supply, much cheaper.
