John Guare (pronounced "gwair") is a contemporary playwright, born February 5, 1938 in New York City. Some of his best-known works include The House of Blue Leaves (1971), Six Degrees of Separation (1990), Four Baboons Adoring the Sun (1992), and the Lydie Breeze plays.

The House of Blue Leaves won the Best American Play award from the New York Drama Critics Circle, and its successful Lincoln Center revival in 1986 won four Tony awards. The cast included John Mahoney, Christine Baranski, and Swoosie Kurtz.

Six Degrees of Separation also won a New York Drama Critics Circle Award (Best Play), and was adapted for the screen in 1993. The film version starred Stockard Channing, Donald Sutherland, and Will Smith.

Four Baboons Adoring the Sun was nominated for four Tony awards, including Best Play.
