Although born blind, Feliciano learned guitar during his childhood in
New York before earning a reputation on the Greenwich Village scene there and signing to RCA. His early recognition was limited to the
Latin charts (where three Spanish language albums triumphed). With Feliciano! (1968), the multi-lingual star broke into
US and UK charts, including Latin versions of The Doors' 'Light My Fire' and The Mamas and The Papas 'California Dreamin'.
Despite his emphasis on covers (including a controversial version of 'The Star Spangled Banner' at the 1968 World Series baseball tournament), Feliciano wrote both the Bruce Ruffin UK hit 'Rain' (1971) and the theme for 70s American sit-com Chico And The Man (1975). His stateside fame expanded to TV appeareances (Kung Fu and McMillan And Wife) and movies (the sountrack to 1969's MacKenna's Gold).
His unique Latin take on Rock led to six Grammy awards and gold and platinum albums around the world.
