In many
tropical countries where bananas are more common than
tomatoes, many
condiments are made from bananas instead of the
ketchup-based sauces that are more familiar in
America. One of these refreshing differences is Jufran, a red banana ketchup made in The
Philippines that has permanently converted me away the plain old American stuff. Most people should be able to handle the hot Jufran, which features a pleasant
chili heat without an overpowering vinegar taste.
I've pretty much stopped eating
french fries because so few
restaurants offer Jufran as a condiment, so I've started baking more
tater tots at home instead. You should be able to find medium-sized glass bottles of Jufran at Mexican or Asian grocery stores for about US$1.75. Go there for the Jufran, and who knows what else you'll find while you're there.
