The great all-rounder and the caption of the Indian cricket Team which won the world Cup in 1983.

Kapil Dev is often called the best pace bowler India ever had. Kapil has 684 wickets and almost 9,000 runs in total, from both versions of the game. His great knock of 175 not out against Zimbabwe in the 1983 world cup was a record in one day cricket for more than 15 years.

Early Years...

Kapil Dev Nikhanj was born on January 6, 1959 in Chandigarh in Haryana. His father Ram Lal Nikhanj was a merchant who was basically from Pakistan and migrated to India after the partition in 1947.

Kapil Dev started playing cricket in 1971. He joined Chandigarh Cricket Club and and had been a desciple of the great coach Mr. D.P. Azad in the beginning. His debut in first class cricket was in the 1975-1976 Ranji Trophy, for Haryana against Punjab. His style as a fast bowler was soon noticed and he was started being called "The Haryana Hurricane".

In the Indian Team...

Kapil wore the test cap for the country in 1979. His debut was against Pakistan in Faisalabad. His descipline and sportsmanship coupled with the unequalled cricketing talent helped him build his career as the most acclaimed Indian cricketer of the time. He was chosen as the captain of the team soon. India has won many tournaments including the world cup of 1983 under his captaincy.
