A pianist/vibraphonist from West Germany, part of the first wave of European free jazz musicians in the 60s. He was a member of one of Don Cherry's first groups; Berger's first recording as a leader (on ESP-Disk) was memorable for the annoying sound of his voice singing along with his improvisations - not unlike Keith Jarrett's equally-annoying quirk. After emigrating to New York, he settled in Woodstock, where (with Ornette Coleman) he founded the Creative Music Studio.
