Republican Senator from Texas

Senator Hutchison grew up in La Marque, Texas, and graduated from the University of Texas and University of Texas Law School.

Hutchinson was a political reporter for KPRC-TV in Houston. She later became Press Secretary to fellow Texan Anne Armstrong, Vice Chairman of the Republican National Committee. She served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives, and was elected Texas State Treasurer in 1990. She is married to Ray, one of her colleagues from the Texas House.

With her election to the U.S. Senate in 1993 Kay Bailey Hutchison became first woman to represent Texas in the U.S. Senate. She was appointed vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference. She is a U.S. delegate to the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission.
