The Kerguelen Plateau, AKA the Kerguelen-Heard Plateau, is a large igneous province located on the Antarctic Plate, in the southern Indian Ocean. It was formed during the breakup of Gondwana (AKA Gondwanaland) 130 million years ago, and formed a land bridge between Antarctica and the Indo-Australian Plate. It has since sunk, and is now an oceanic plateau about 3,000 km to the southwest of Australia. The Kerguelen Islands, the McDonald Islands, and Heard Island are the only spots that still peek above the surface.
