Baptism of the Sword, or the Sikh baptism. First instituted by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. The ceremony constitutes of prayer reading from the Sikh holy book, The Guru Granth Sahib and includes the drinking of amrit. Amrit is prepared by the conductees by stirring sugar puffs(for lack of a better word) in an iron bowl of water with a double-edged sword(Khande) while reciting the holy scripture. This is where the ceremony derives its name from, as Khande means sword in North Indian languages.
