Komarr

A book in the Miles Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Miles has to solve his first case as an
Imperial Auditor while dealing with his developing love for his hostess, Madame Ekaterin Vorsoisson.
Ms Bujold has recommended this book as a starting point for readers new to the Vorkosigan series, since we are seeing Miles at the beginning of his second career and through the eyes of someone who hasn't met him before.

In the Lois McMaster Bujold series about the Vorkosigan family, Komarr is a planet which isn't too far a trip from the Vorkosigan native planet of Barrayar, and for the past few decades ruled by Barrayar. It was conquered to make Barrayarans feel safe again after the Komarrans chose to let Cetagandan invaders through the wormhole between the two planets, so that Cetagandans could attack Barrayar. The Komarrans are only gradually adapting to Barrayaran government.
