Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874,
in Clifton (now
New London),
P.E.I.. A year later,
her mother Clara Woolner MacNeil died. Her father
moved to
Saskatchewen, while Maud went to live
with her grandparents in
Cavendish and
attended the Cavedish School. She was further
educated at
Dalhousie University in
Halifax,
and
Prince of Wales College in
Charlottetown.
After working as a teacher for three years and as
a newspaperwoman on the Halifax Daily Echo for one,
Montgomery began publishing stories and poems in
newspapers and children's magazines.
Her first novel, Anne of Green Gables,
was published in 1908 and was an instant success
in North America. It is now considered a classic of
children's literature. In 1911, she married Rev.
Ewen Macdonald on P.E.I. and came to live in
Leaksdale, north of Uxbridge Ontario. This
is where her three children were born and she wrote
almost a dozen books there before 1926 when the family
moved to Norval, Ontario.
Maud was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1935,
and her Anne of Green Gables series has
been made into several motion pictures, as well as
a popular television series. She died in 1942,
was buried at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island.
Montgomery is best known for her Anne series, which in truth are only a fraction of her work. Mostly she was a nostalgic author with novels about children set on Prince Edward Island.
