Jazz organist from Newark, 1940-1978, who took the bebop'n'blues
approach of Jimmy Smith (and lesser players) and extended it with the
modal and free-improv innovations of the 60's (he was a Tranehead). One of the Massed Electric Keyboardists during the Bitches Brew sessions; made brief, reluctant forays into the pop market birthed by its success. Also known by his Muslim name Khalid Yasin. Co-founder of the Tony Williams Lifetime.
