Italian writer. Born in Racalmuto, Sicily, 1921, died Palermo, 1989. Best known for literate political thrillers like The Day of the Owl (1961) and Equal Danger (1971), but also responsible for some excellent non-fiction - notably The Moro Affair (1978).

All my books in fact make up one book. A book about Sicily which concerns the sorrowful events of its past and its present, and which ends up articulating the story of the continual defeat of reason, and the story of those who were personally crushed and destroyed in that defeat. - Leonardo Sciascia
Sciascia made out of his curious Sicilian experience a literature that is not quite like anything else ever done by a European. - Gore Vidal

Above all else, his books are an object lesson in economy and humanity.
