The London Borough of Lewisham is one of the biggest boroughs, and covers the areas of Lewisham, Blackheath, Brockley, Catford, Deptford, Downham, Forest Hill, Grove Park, Hither Green, Ladywell, Lee, New Cross and Sydenham. Lewisham itself has been around since the Domesday Book: the present-day suburb is mostly large, attractive but run-down Victorian houses, built when the advent of the railway made it an ideal place for commuters. It's a fairly cheap place to live, for London, but not overly burdened with cool things to do. Back in the Seventies it was the scene of race riots, prompted by the large black population and the rise of the scummy racist British Movement in nearby areas.
