Isaac Liev Schreiber was born in San Francisco on October 4, 1967. He is the son of painter Heather Schreiber and theatrical actor Tell Schreiber (also has a brother Pablo Schreiber). At age 1, the family moved from San Francisco to Canada. His parents divorced when he was 4 or 5. He and his mother then moved to New York, where she drove a cab. During that time, they lived as squatters in an abandoned building. His education includes PS 41 (New York), Brooklyn Tech, Friends Seminary (graduated 1985), Hamsphire College (BRA 1988), Yale (MFA 1992), and a year in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. He has brown hair, blue eyes and is 6'2" tall.

His first acting job was on Broadway, where he appeared in In the Summer House. More theater work followed and in 1994, the actor made his film debut in the Steve Martin comedy Mixed Nuts. Schreiber got an introduction to a more mainstream audience thanks to his role as killer Cotton Weary in Wes Craven's mega-hit Scream, and later in the film's sequel, Scream 2 (1997). The same year, Schreiber had leading roles in two more independent films, The Daytrippers and Walking and Talking, as well as a role in the Mel Gibson thriller Ransom. Other notable roles include Phantoms, Sphere, Hamlet and The Sum of All Fears. His most critically acclaimed performance to date was playing Orson Welles in the HBO production of "RKO 281" (1999), earning Schreiber a much-deserved Emmy nomination.
