Started in 1965 and became a college in 1970, five years later it was the fifth biggest place of higher education in Sweden and became a university the same year. In 1996 Campus Norrköping was added to the university making it one of the few universities in Sweden spread out across multiple cities.

The university consists of three faculties: LiTH, the philosophical faculty and HU (Health university). It is most best known for its unusual interdisciplinary education and the fact that most departments are spread out over all three institutions. The CS and Engineering programs have also earned some recognition in later years due to fact that graduates from LiTH have the highest initial salaries in the country.
