"Little girl, little girl, where have you been?"
"Gathering roses to give to the Queen."
"Little girl, little girl, what gave she you ?"
"She gave me a diamond as big as my shoe."

From The Real Mother Goose

Since no new Kohinoor or Great Star of Africa has shown up in the possession of any little Victorian, we must assume that our little girl had very tiny feet or was simply lying. The answer to this mystery we shall never know.

The phrase Little girl, where have you been? seems very common in teen angst poetry and diary entries of the same cathegory. Isn't it good to know that some of our old nursery rhymes still make an impact on today's literary movement?
