Online journaling websites based on LiveJournal's software spring up all the time. The modus operandi is by now standard: each new site starts out as a completely free service, builds up a substantial userbase, then starts charging money for fully-featured accounts and for new account creation. Most of these new sites are of use only for people who are turned off by the hassle of invite codes and just want to have their journals hosted for the minimal cost (i.e., zero dollars, zero cents). They are mostly worthless as comunities since the userbases are small and the majority of serious journalers gravitate towards the larger and older sites, such as LiveJournal, DeadJournal and uJournal.

Here's a breakdown of LiveJournal-compatible sites currently (May 2003) in existence and the cost of paid time, if any.

  • For-pay services, invite codes required:
    • LiveJournal.com: 2 months = $5, 6 months = $15, 12 months = $25, permanent account = $100
    • DeadJournal.com: 2 months = $5, 6 monhts = $10, 12 months = $15
    • uJournal.org: 2 months = $3.75, 6 months = $11.25, 12 months = $18.75, permanent account = $75
    • InsaneJournal.com: 2 months = $5, 6 months = $10, 12 months = $20
