Lloyd Axworthy was first elected to the
Canadian Parliament in May 1979, and was appointed to
Cabinet as
Minister of
Employment and
Immigration (1980-1983), Minister Responsible for the
Status of Women (1980-1982), and Minister of
Transport (1983-1984). After the 1984 election, he was the
Official Opposition Critic for Regional and Industrial Expansion and the
Canadian Wheat Board (1984),
Trade Critic and
Deputy Critic for
External Affairs (1985-1988),
Liberal Critic for Trade (1989), Chairman of both the Liberal Trade Task Force and the Liberal
Caucus Economic Policy Committee. In 1990, he was appointed Liberal Critic for
External Affairs and Chairman of Liberal Caucus Committee on External Affairs and
National Defence, and he was nominated Vice-Chairman of the House Standing Committee on External Affairs and
International Trade in 1991. He served as Minister of Western
Economic Diversification (November 1993-January 1996) and became Minister of Foreign Affairs on January 25, 1996. He resigned from
Cabinet in the fall of 2000.
Mr. Axworthy obtained an MA in political science in 1963 from Princeton University and a PhD in 1972. He was a professor of political science at the University of Winnipeg from 1965-1967, and from 1969-1979, and from 1969-1973 he was Director of the University's Institute of Urban Studies.
