The 2nd largest school district in the United States (Guess what the other one is...). It contains 677 schools and 906,789 students as of December 2001.

The LAUSD contains some good schools, for example, the magnet school of North Hollywood High, and some truly bad ones since its juristiction contains all of the city of Los Angeles and all or parts of 28 other cities, as well as some unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. The LAUSD also is notoriously bad with its budget, it was recently releved of its several million dollar debt to the state of California by Governor Gray Davis (D). This is mainly to blame through corrupt adminstrators and in some cases schools that only take attendence once a day. Another classic example of LAUSD troubles is the Belmont High School Fiasco.
