California artist Lucia Kleinhans Mathews is most well-known for her collaborative work with Arthur Mathews, as the team of Arthur and Lucia Mathews. Born in 1870, she met Arthur when she was his art student. They married in 1894, and she was his artistic equal and in some areas his superior. Together they co-founded the California Decorative Style. In 1906, she co-founded the magazine Philopolis and created most of the woodcut designs for it, including the striking cover art of black and red California poppies. Many of her paintings and drawings are in museums, with several important works at the Oakland Museum of California. She died in 1955.
