Austrian jurist and civil servant. Born 1800, died 1877.

Köchel's claim to fame rests chiefly in the systematic catalogue of W.A. Mozart's works that he collated in 1862.

The catalogue, which is thematically organised and uses the letters K or KV (for Köchel-Verzeichnis, "Köchel index"), has attained a canonical use, despite later changes in the chronological listing of the individual pieces. The content structure and the note apparatus of the Köchel catalogue has set the standard for other, similar catalogues of composers' works.

Köchel also catalogues the works of the German baroque composer, J.J. Fux.
