Capital of the Yucatan state of Mexico.

Roughly a little more than a million people live in this quite uninteresting city that features a nice theatre, a park, and (as in any Mexican town) a big market with a lot of nice/useless/edible/you-name-it stuff.

As the city is the biggest on the entire Yucatan peninsula (a rank soon to be overtaken by Cancun) the community once tried to build a boulevard to keep up with the boulevard in Mexico City. Unsuccessfull they were indeed.

The city is a good place to rest for a day or two, if you're a backpacker travelling by bus to eg. Chichen Itza or Cozumel. Staying there for a week isn't recommended, unless you rent a car and go out into the country side.
