MER is a commonly used abbreviation in the Canadian (and probably others) mutual fund industry. It stands for Management Expense Ratio, or the amount of money the mutual fund charges you to manage the fund. It is usually expressed as an annual percentage, the lower the better. It's a kind of "hidden charge", like bond commissions - you'll see it in the prospectus and annual report, but returns quoted in newspapers and on your statement will generally be net of the MER. Check out Management Expense Ratio for a more in depth discussion.
