Maat Mons is the highest
volcano on
Venus, raging over 8 km high.
Lava flows extend for hundreds of kilometres across the fractured
plains surrounding it.
It has been extensively mapped by the Magellan probe,
whose radar systems produced detailed photograph-like
images of Venus's surface.
Due to the low radar reflectance of the Maat Mons area,
the lava streams are believed to be quite fresh,
and many scientists agree that the volcano is still active.
It's name is a composite; Mons means mount(ain) in Latin,
and Ma'at is an Egyptian goddess of truth and justice.
