The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation (a name you might recognize if you are a frequent PBS watcher) is famous for its yearly MacArthur Fellowships, large cash grants to "individuals who show exceptional merit and promise for continued and enhanced creative work" in any field. Applications are not solicited or accepted, so don't get any ideas. The current grant is a hefty $500,000, no strings attached. They are popularly called "genius grants", but the foundation dislikes the term.
