A large
French breed, Maine-Anjou are named for the
river valleys in which the
breed was developed. They are dark
red with
white spots around the
head and
facial features.
Their feed conversion rate, the ratio of food they consume to the weight they acquire, is excellent, especially for a breed of their size. As a result, Maine-Anjou are frequently cross-bred with other cows in an effort to extract this valuable trait.
They were introduced in America in the past three decades, almost entirely through artificial insemination.
