This was inspired by a question posed to David Feldman in an Imponderables book. The questioner asked why paper and plastic cups were built top heavy, ie, why are the top portions larger than the bottom ones, resulting in more likelihood of spillage? The answer was quite simply that they were stackable this way and would save shelf space. Well, in the case of plastic, I think I have got a solution. Make the bottom portion collapseable, along with a two sided velcro strap on both the left and right hand sides, as well as the cup bottom. The user would then take the two straps, pull these out and attach to the bottom side, resulting in a perfectly symmetrical cup. I told this to one of my colleagues and he informed me that it would be even better if these could be made edible at the same time.
