Manchuria is the collective name for the three north east provinces of China know as Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning. 20th Century history includes development and colonial occupation by Russia at the turn of the 20th century and Japan which named the area Manchukuo, from 1931 until 1945.

Manchuria is also part of the setting for Frank Sinatra's 1960s political thriller The Manchurian Candidate, where US servicemen were brainwashed by communist Chinese jailers during the Korean War.
