Born in
Milan in
1925, Mario Merz is best known for his sculptures incorporating the
Fibonacci numbers in
neon lights. His work is well represented in major
modern art museums across Europe including Hamurg's
Galerie der Gegenwart and London's new
Tate museum. Merz's work has also been exhibited in New York's
Guggenheim
Mario Merz's
installations can also be characterised by his use of
found objects,
spirals and
habitats (eg
igloos/
tents). His work tends to be of a fairly
large scale, and is often best viewed at a distance.
A classic example of his work adorns a wall of the great hall in
Zürich hauptbahnhof although some of the
neon lights are in need of replacement.
Mario Merz now lives in
Turin.
