UMBC student and member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity who shot and killed himself in the bathroom of the Sideling apartment building at UMBC campus on the afternoon of November 7, 2001. Corporal Vickie Warehime of the Baltimore County Police stated that the gunshot wound sustained by Schmitt appeared to be self-inflicted. UMBC Police Chief Major John Cook has said that no foul play appears to have been involved in Schmitt's death.
