Group of atolls and reefs in the Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Hawaii and Papua New Guinea. Its government is described in the CIA World Factbook as "constitutional government in free association with the US; the Compact of Free Association entered into force 21 October 1986." It claims the US territory of Wake Island.
