As graduate student and later, a member of the CSRG at UC Berkeley during the development of BSD, Kirk McKusick was responsible for the BSD Fast File System (including the recent Soft Updates addition) and much of the work on BSD virtual memory. He oversaw the BSD 4.3 & 4.4 releases for CSRG, and co-wrote both the 4.3 & 4.4 editions of the famous "daemon book" - The Design & Implementation of the 4.4BSD Operating System. He has also served many years on the Usenix Board of Directors, including two as the president of the association.
