Maurice Duruflé : 1902 - 1986. French composer and virtuoso organist, taught by Vierne, and best known for his fantastic Requiem (1947) which was written for choir (with solos), orchestra and organ, although an organ-only version exists. Often overlooked in favour of the over-played work of the same form by Fauré. Despite this, his Requiem has to an extent entered the standard repertoire. Celebrated in the USA for his tours there, of which he made several. Very expressive in style, and his music is harmonically more varied, modern and generally interesting than that of Fauré. His six organ works are more intended for concert recital than for sacred use. After a car accident in 1975, Duruflé was never able to play the organ again.
