There are several localities around the world which were named whatever the words 'meeting place' meant in the local indigenous language, quite probably because the surveyors or explorers at the time accidentally mistook the expression for being a place name. If this is the case, it appears that the British who colonised Australia were the biggest plonkers.

* Better known as Ayer's Rock

** 'Meeting Place' is quite an appropriate name for the capital city of Australia, a federated country. Canberra is also thought to mean 'breasts', since the city is in the shadow of two mountains with rounded peaks. I will not consider the notion that breasts can be considered meeting places

*** Katimavik is the name of some Inuit structure from which the township was named after.

**** Named because it was where King Sobhuza II and King George IV met in 1947.

It should also be mentioned that Casino means 'Meeting Place' in Italian. There are towns in Australia and the United States named Casino, and they have no association with gambling.
