Miki was a member of the Japanese parliament, the Diet, from 1937 until his death. He opposed the war with the U.S., and after World War II, he became a cabinet minister in the first post-war cabinet.
In 1955, Miki joined the LDP as leader of his own faction. He succeeded the corruption-indicted Tanaka Kakuei as prime minister from 1974 to 1976, gaining the nickname "Mr. Clean". During his time in office, Miki sought to increase the democratic influence of the LDP membership on the party's politics.
