My wife's sister recently came down for a visit, so on Saturday morning the family gathered at my mother-in-law's house for brunch. Before I started cooking anything, I mixed up a pitcher of milk punch which was a huge hit. Part of that was due to this being a drink I hadn't served before, and novelty often scores points with my family. I think too that this was well received because the idea of drinking bourbon first thing in the morning is interesting to say the least. It looks like there may be a demand for a pitcher of milk punch at all family gatherings in the foreseeable future.

This drink works well for brunch (and is definitely preferred by our family over the more traditional mimosa), but it also works well mid-afternoon or late at night. It goes best with good company, good conversation, and much laughter.

Method

Mix all ingredients together in a pitcher, stirring well. Serve in old-fashioned glasses. I served it immediately after mixing. After serving, just sit back and watch the smiles on your guests' faces when they taste it.

This recipe makes about six servings and can be easily doubled. It should keep well in the refrigerator, but in my family it didn't last long enough for me to find out for sure.

This recipe is adapted from one I found in Commander's Kitchen by Ti Adelaide Martin and Jamie Shannon, former executive chef at Commander's Palace in New Orleans.
