Monica Shannon was born in Ontario. She grew up on a thoroughbred ranch in the Rocky Mountains. Her Newbery winning children's book, Dobry, was based on what she learned from Bulgarian sheepherders in the mountains where she used to live.

She had a bear cub as a pet, and a cow named Flashlight.

Shannon worked as a librarian in California. She died on August 13, 1965.

At some point before she died, she wrote this:

Only My Opinion

Is a caterpillar ticklish?
Well, it's always my belief
That he giggles, as he wiggles
Across a hairy leaf.

And, if you do a yahoo search on +"monica shannon" +"dobry," two of the three results are porn sites. That's a legacy.
