Montevideo is
Uruguay's capital, and its major port on the
Atlantic Ocean. The city is located at 34.87S
latitude and 56.17W
longitude, and has an estimated population of 1.43 million people as of 2001. In 1726, Spanish conquerors established a fortress at Montevideo that would remain loyal to
Spain, even after the Spanish
monarchy was overthrown by
Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808.
Minnesota also has a city named Montevideo, which is the
county seat of
Chippewa County. It is located along Highway 7, on the banks of the Minnesota River near Granite Falls, and has a population of less than 6000 people.
