On December 6, 1989, a deranged man named Marc Lepine entered Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, armed with a high powered rifle. He singled out women engineering students; he intended to kill feminists for "ruining his life". He shot 27 people, 14 fatally, before killing himself.

This event precipitated two important national discussions. The first was about violence against women. The second was a national debate on gun control that resulted in additional firearms legislation.
