In folklore, moonbeams are gathered by faeries during a full moon, or used as a means to ascend or descend to earth. The sacred bull of Memphis, Apis, was conceived from a moonbeam.

Although Webster 1913 doesn't mention it, William Shakespeare was the first one to join the words "moon" and "beam" together to form this compound word. See A Midsummer Night's Dream: Act 3, Scene 1.

Moon"beam` (?), n.

A ray of light from the moon.
