a Swahili word meaning "smoke", Moshi is also the name of a major town in northern Tanzania. Located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, and an hour away from Arusha and Mount Meru, Moshi is a town of tree-lined streets, active tourism, and gentle climate. The area around Moshi is one of the most fertile in Tanzania, and is a prolific coffee-growing zone. Moshi is around 1000 m above sea level, 34 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and only an hour east of Arusha. While population estimates in Africa are never precise, Moshi's population can probably be estimated to be around 190,000 people. It is the seventh or eighth largest city in Tanzania, after Dar Es Salaam, Mwanza, Zanzibar, Morogoro, Mbeya, Tanga, and possibly Arusha (their populations are similar).
