Lady Kaga died on the 13th day of the 2nd month in 1193, according to the
Japanese lunar calendar. Her husband,
Fujiwara no Shunzei, and her son,
Fujiwara no Teika, were two of the most influential poets of the late
Heian era and early
Kamakura era.
One autumn, both poets, at different times, visited her grave site.

There, beneath the moss,
Does she forever hear
This forlorn wind
Through the pines?

In autumn, on the day I left for Gojo, there was a storm. Taking my leave,
Falling jewels,
Neither dewdrops nor tears can remain;
Neither in this house where I long for the dead
Nor in this autumn wind.
