無門
Hui-k'ai (慧開, Jp. Ekai) was a Chinese monk who was the abbot of Lungxiang (Jp. Ryusho)
monastery, a center of Zen Buddhism. He was born
in 1183 and died in 1260.
Very little is known about him, and the
sole reason he is remembered today is that he
compiled and annotated the collection of Zen koans
known as The Gateless Gate (Jp. Mumonkan, Ch. Wumenguan). In fact, he himself is better
known by the same name as his masterpiece, Mumon in Japanese
or Wumen in Chinese, the literal meaning being
simply "no gate".
