NCP, or Network Control Protocol, preceded TCP as a transport layer protocol for the ARPANET. It was simplex, ergo each application required two connections, and an even-odd pair of numbers was reserved for each application. Most of the port numbers for standard services (e.g. Telnet, FTP, SMTP) are based off the NCP port numbers.

The name of a British company ("National Car Parks/Parking" ) that owns and operates a large number of multi-story car parks. The company took advantage of WW2 by buying (at a good rate) the land of bombed-out buildings and turning them into car parks.
