The National Latin Exam is written annually worldwide, under the sponsorship of the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. Students who are enrolled in or have completed a Latin course are eligible to take the exam, which is distributed by mail and taken under the supervision of a proctor. During its last administration date, more than 149 000 Latin students wrote the NLE.
The NLE consists of 40 multiple choice questions and may be written at the following levels:
- Introduction to Latin
- Latin I
- Latin II
- Latin III
- Latin III-IV Prose
- Latin III-IV Poetry
- Latin V-VI
Students may choose to write the exam at a course level above — but never under — their own.
Various ribbons, certificates and medals are awarded to those who perform particularly well. Those who have achieved top exam scores in Latin III and above and promise to take at least one course in Latin or Classical Greek at a post secondary level may apply to receive a $1000 scholarship.
